Consent is an important topic to learn about and there is always more to learn. We continue to define what consent means to us and each other. There are also a lot of different situations that have never really been modeled for people. The purpose of the Consent Made Simple series is to provide examples of positive examples of consent being properly observed from a variety of different situations and viewpoints. These scenarios apply to any person of any gender.
This episode brings us into a courtroom during a sexual assault trial. The defense lawyer attempts to introduce the clothing worn by the victim as evidence that the victim had actually given consent and so it was not a case of assault.
Clothing is never something that can determine consent. A person can get dressed up for all kinds of reasons but this does not mean they dressed up for their attacker, wished to engage in sexual activity, or even that clothes have anything to do with sexual assault whatsoever.
The “What Were You Wearing” Art Exhibit actually does an amazing job of proving that clothing has nothing to do with a person’s consent. The exhibit shows the clothing of victims next to their stories. It’s a powerful visual statement that shatters dangerous preconceptions of clothing and how it relates to victim blaming.
