Consent is an important topic to learn about and there is always more to learn. We continue to define what consent means to us and each other. There are also a lot of different situations that have never really been modeled for people. The purpose of the Consent Made Simple series is to provide examples of positive examples of consent being properly observed from a variety of different situations and viewpoints. These scenarios apply to any person of any gender.
This time we find ourselves with two people on the street at the end of a first date. One person indicates they had a good time and would like for things to continue. Sadly the other person doesn’t feel the same and doesn’t wish to have a second date. They state this openly and frankly.
It can be frustrating or sad when something we like doesn’t work out but it’s important that we always respect the other person’s decision and space. It also takes courage to be open and honest about an experience as well. Many people will want to blunt the truth, give evasive answers, or play games because they don’t want to face a big reaction from the person. They may also be concerned about hurting that person’s feelings.
Learning how to accept rejection with grace is a difficult skill and being rejected is never fun. We can still learn to take things in stride by remembering that sometimes people just aren’t a good fit. Dating is all about finding that good fit. It can take time and patience but is worth the effort.
