Sex Talk
Bisexuality is a label that is often misunderstood and misrepresented, yet it’s an incredibly diverse and valid identity. There are many misconceptions surrounding bisexuality, so it’s important to understand the definition of this orientation so that we can better understand and support those who identify as bisexual. In this article, we’ll explore what bisexuality is and how it’s defined.
What is Bisexuality?
Bisexuality is a complex sexual orientation that has been around for centuries, yet remains largely misunderstood today. Bisexuality has traditionally defined as being attracted to both men and women, but as we understand more about gender, the definition is continuously being expanded. Some people still see bisexuality as an attraction to both men and women, but many people just see it as an attraction to two, or more, genders. It’s clear that bisexuality can mean different things to different people.
It can be nuanced and complicated, with some individuals feeling more attraction to one gender than the other. Attraction is not always an even split. It’s perfectly normal for someone to feel a stronger attraction to one gender over another and still be bisexual.
At its core, bisexuality can simply mean having the capacity and openness to attraction to two or more genders – something we should celebrate! So if you’re unsure about your own sexuality, remember: there’s no wrong way to be bisexual!
Challenges of Being Bisexual
Bi-erasure and biphobia are real and a serious problem. It’s truly a shame that many people still think bisexuality is simply an inability to make up one’s mind or they believe bisexuals are just confused.
This type of discrimination can have very real consequences on the mental health of those who identify as bi+. It should come as no surprise that, as with members of other discriminated against groups, this group faces higher rates of depression and anxiety because of the stigma associated with their sexual orientation. Both heterosexual and gay communities can reject bisexuals and many people of this orientation often feel that they fit in nowhere. It can make many people shy about being open with their sexual orientation.
Bisexuals face discrimination from all walks of life, including other members of the LGBTQ community. There are even some schools of thought that argue for removing the “B” in LGBTQ* from the acronym based on the historical definition of bisexuality being attracted to only men and women.
Awareness & Acceptance
With many people feeling like bisexuals are just confused and unable to make a choice in who they love, it can be difficult for them to find acceptance.
It’s time we become more aware and accepting of the bisexual community. We should leave stereotypes that suggest that bisexuality is simply a phase or an inability to decide between genders behind; instead, let’s focus on encouraging understanding, support, and acceptance of those who identify as bisexual.
Let’s move past outdated ideas about the way people choose to express their sexuality and celebrate individuals who don’t feel confined by labels – especially those relating to gender-based orientation. Bisexuality is real, valid, and worthy of celebration!
Conclusion: Empowering Bisexuals
Bisexuality is real, and we have a responsibility to recognize it. Let’s create an inclusive society where people of all orientations can be their true selves without the fear of judgment or discrimination. We don’t need to limit ourselves by only recognizing two genders – understanding that there is a multitude of gender identities and sexual orientations will only strengthen us. So let’s do our part in creating a world that celebrates diversity in sexuality.
